Advice on Study Abroad in Honduras

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

CLOTHES
There are washers and dryers for use in the Kellogg Center where we will stay (about $1.00 for wash and $1.00 for dry; detergent can be purchased in the grocery store on campus) so you do not need to bring too many clothes. if the group is large, it may not be possible to wash/dry your clothes exactly when you wish to do so, so pay attention to the hotel schedule for use of the machines. There are also irons to share. It is often hot and humid, so bring cotton clothes. You need to bring a mixture of professional clothes and casual clothes. For women, please note that it is a Catholic country; we are representing Purdue and the United States, so please dress somewhat on the conservative side (no bare midriffs, no low necks, no tight clothes). Open-toed shoes are fine for school; skirts, dresses and pants with short sleeved tops are good. For men, khakis and a polo shirt are good. The nights can be cool in Copan you might want to bring jeans and a light sweatshirt or long sleeved shirt (also useful on a cold plane). You might need a very light rain jacket and/or umbrella. You will need a bathing suit as there is a pool on campus, tennis racket and clothes if you want to play as there are courts on campus, and hiking boots if you want to hike. A towel for the pool and flip flop sandals to wear back and forth to the pool and in the shower are useful. You might want to bring cards to play in the evenings, and DVDs (to use on your laptop or on long bus rides).

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR WHEN I AM THERE?
The school’s teachers wear a variety of clothes that range from the more casual to the more professional, but they always look well dressed. For the hotel, and for free time, shorts and tee shirts are fine, but again please choose conservative items. For weekend trips, jeans and shorts are fine.

MEDICINE AND TOILETRIES
You will need to bring a variety of medications with you as over the counter remedies are not carried in every brand, and you will not necessarily find what you want. In addition, it could cost significantly more than you would pay for the same item here. Plan accordingly! You will definitely need Imodium (for diarrhea), and if you use them aspirin, cold medication, motion sickness medication, mosquito repellant and also some first aid items. You may also need something like EX Lax, as that can become a problem for a few people.

You can purchase most toiletries you would need in Honduras, but only in the capital city which we seldom visit. Also, items of personal hygiene etc. are not carried in every brand, and you will not necessarily find what you want. In addition, it could cost significantly more than you would pay for the same item here. Plan accordingly!

OTHER ITEMS
You will need to bring a watch and a small travel alarm clock. It would be useful to bring a small flashlight (and batteries) with you. You will also definitely need a water bottle, sun block, sunglasses and a sun hat. There are no hairdryers, so bring your own. If you can possibly get access to a laptop computer it would help a great deal. Bring a camera; a digital one is great as you can put pictures on your Task Steam portfolio. I have one that uses discs which you can use; if you decide to do that, bring discs. You might want to bring a DVD player and some DVDs. An English-Spanish dictionary is inexpensive and can be useful.
