2004 International Reading Association Exemplary Reading Award for Indiana

The past five years have brought remarkable change to Westlawn Elementary School.  In 1999, on the 3rd grade ISTEP Westlawn had 58% of their children pass Language Arts. In 2003, they had 85% of their third-graders pass Language Arts. Westlawn became eligible for the I-READ grant in 2001.  Mr. Gary Storie (building principal) encouraged Westlawn teachers to explore different literacy programs available. Teachers began to search for direction in their literacy program. They wanted a research-based program with strong professional development to implement into their Language Arts. As they explored, they found Literacy Collaborative to be a perfect fit for their building. Teachers unanimously voted by secret ballot to apply for the I-READ grant and to adopt Literacy Collaborative. Westlawn only had enough money to send one person to Purdue University to become a primary literacy coordinator, but this did not stop their upper elementary. They began to have study meetings, once every 2 weeks to study Fountas and Pinnell’s Guiding Readers and Writers, Grades 3-6.  Westlawn has worked very hard to implement the philosophy of Fountas and Pinnell throughout the building. Through teamwork of the whole staff, Westlawn has found success with Literacy Collaborative. Westlawn Elementary School is honored to receive the International Reading Association Exemplary Reading Program Award for the state of Indiana this year.
