Suggested Activities for Observation and Participation

The purpose of this field experience is to assist the teacher, and in so doing, learn what teaching is like from the other side of the desk. Please review this list prior to the day of the first visit.  Review this list with your supervising teacher and decide on what things you might do to assist and participate.

Beginning with the first visit:

  • Your teacher will introduce you to the class as Mr. or Ms. __________.

  • You will observe the teacher and the students.

  • Beginning with the second visit you will begin to assist the teacher by:

    Beginning with the third and remaining visits, you assist and participate as a teacher by:

  • doing one or more of the assisting tasks (see above)

  • and participate as a teacher, by

  • tutoring students

  • helping individual students with missed assignments

  • administering a make-up examination or a worksheet activity

  • accompanying a group of students to the media center and help locate information

  • leading or assisting with a small group activity (i.e. reading or math groups)

  • assisting small groups of students as they do specific activities (design a poster or write a story)

  • reading a book to the entire class

  • presenting a lesson to the whole class or part of the class.

  • having conversations with the supervising teacher about his/her approach to teaching.
