PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM

The program provides teachers with the professional training needed to add Computer Education to an instructional license through the Educational Technology Program in the Curriculum & Instruction Department. The program ensures the development of appropriate skills among those who lead and/or teach in programs utilizing educational technology as well as for all classroom teachers who want to be able to effectively integrate technology into the curriculum.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Computer Education licensure program is in alignment with the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB), which has adopted the ISTE standards for Technology Facilitation (Initial Endorsement Standards). The Technology Facilitation standards prepare candidates to serve as building/campus-level technology facilitators. Candidates completing this program will exhibit knowledge, skills, and dispositions equipping them to teach technology applications; demonstrate effective use of technology to support student learning of content; and provide professional development, mentoring, and basic technical assistance for other teachers who require support in their efforts to apply technology to support student learning. In addition, students completing the Computer Education program at Purdue will develop an understanding of the social, economic, and political factors related to the use of educational technology while also gaining an understanding of the cognitive and affective characteristics of learners of various learning abilities. Students will develop an understanding of technology operations and concepts, planning and designing learning environments and experiences, apply and implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for utilizing technology to maximize student learning, apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies, and apply technology to enhance and improve personal productivity and professional practice. The Purdue Educational Technology program is performance-based and demonstrated by way of a portfolio.

COURSE OF STUDY

Students who currently hold or are working towards a standard instructional license are required to complete 15 credit hours of course work in the area of Educational Technology:  an introductory course on educational technology skills and software related to product development (either EDCI 27000/27100 or EDCI 56000), a course on design and development of educational technology instructional products (EDCI 56600), a course on integrating educational technology in the classroom (EDCI 56400), a course on information security, networking concepts, and technology management (EDCI 59100), and a practicum in Educational Technology (EDCI 57300).

The core licensure courses are offered a minimum of once per year, including summer sessions as needed, on the West Lafayette campus of Purdue. Courses are taught by Educational Technology faculty and approved instructors. The 12 credits in licensure course work are prerequisites for the practicum. Teachers complete their practicum experience in their own school setting while teaching students in their classroom.

There is no specific timeline for completing the licensure courses; however, ongoing work and completion within a reasonable period of time is expected. When the required 15 hours of course work has been completed, the Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure (OPPL) will recommend to the Indiana Professional Standards Board that Educational Technology be added to the student's license.  It is important to note that as an additional license students will be certified in the developmental areas that are associated with their primary license.

LICENSURE EVALUATION

The College of Education College of Education Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure (OPPL) handles all professional education licensure for Purdue University. All Educational Technology candidates should request an OPPL evaluation as soon as possible in their licensure program by contacting OPPL (licensure@purdue.edu ) and asking to be sent an Evaluation Request form for the Computer Education licensure program. On question #12 on this form, check "Educational Technology". The one time evaluation fee is $35. All candidates who register with OPPL will be placed on the Educational Technology academic year and summer mailing lists so they will receive timely information about future course offerings.

LICENSURE PROGRAM APPLICATION

The procedure for applying to the licensure program depends on whether you (a) hold a teacher's license and wish to add this area to your license, (b) are seeking a master's degree in addition to completing these licensure requirements, or (c) are currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in teacher education. Students who fall under (a) and (b) should contact the College of Education Graduate Office, while undergraduates should consult their academic advisors.

Licensure-only Candidates: Applicants with a valid teaching license should complete a graduate school application for licensure (be sure to click on "Teacher license-non-degree" in the drop down box, under enrollment objective, on the electronic application form). Indicate on the application form that you want to pursue the Educational Technology licensure. Your application must be accompanied by a $55 application fee, a photocopy of your evaluation from OPPL, and two official transcripts from all universities attended; GRE scores are not required. Please state that you would like to work with Dr. Jennifer Richardson. 

Master's Degree Candidates: Applicants who plan to work simultaneously towards licensure and a master's degree in Educational Technology must submit a complete graduate application (be sure to click on ?Masters Degree? in the drop down box, under enrollment objective, on the electronic application form). This application includes a $55 application fee, two official transcripts from all universities attended, a 300-500 word statement of purpose, and three completed recommendation forms. Indicate on the application that you are interested in the Educational Technology program. Applicants accepted for master's degree study will work with their faculty advisor to tailor a program to meet both the licensure requirements and the master's degree requirements. 

Undergraduate Candidates:  Undergraduates may begin the Computer Education licensure program as soon as they are officially classified as a semester 5 or higher student by the university. All of the licensure courses with 500 numbers are open to junior and senior undergraduates, i.e. all of the courses in the Computer Education licensure program except the Practicum in Educational Technology (EDCI 57300).  University regulations specify that 500 level courses taken by undergraduates when they are classified as semester 5 or 6 must be placed on an undergraduate plan of study.  However, 500 level courses taken by undergraduates when they are classified as semester 7 or 8 can be either placed on the undergraduate plan of study OR reserved for graduate credit by completing form 350 (Academic Record Change), providing the student has a GPA of 3.0 at the time he or she registers.  Form 350 must be completed prior to the first day of class. To receive graduate credit, undergraduate students must earn a grade of A or B in the class.  Undergraduates can reserve up to twelve hours of 500 level coursework for graduate credit before they graduate. Undergraduate Computer Education licensure candidates are encouraged to apply to the Graduate School as a licensure candidate as described in (a) above the semester prior to graduation. The ideal progression for a teacher education student who wishes to begin working on Computer Education licensure as an undergraduate is shown below:
