Purdue University College of Education - Specialized Computer Laboratories

Special facilities supporting technology integration in the College of Education include:

  • Technology Resources Center (TRC)
  • Macintosh Computer Learning Lab (BRNG 3292)
  • Ameritech Distance Education Classroom and Windows Lab (BRNG 3288)
  • Multimedia Development Laboratory (BRNG 3295)


Technology Resources Center (TRC)
The Technology Resources Center, located in Room 3287 of the Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education (BRNG), provides a wide variety of support facilities and services to the College of Education faculty, staff, and students, including:
An up-to-date textbook and instructional materials evaluation collection
Preview centers for video tape, computer software, CD-ROM, videodisc, and audio tape
Up-to-date Windows workstations, donated by Intel Corp., for access to software and the World Wide Web
Scanners for digital capture of images and text
Checkout equipment such as S-VHS camcorders, Windows and Macintosh laptop computers, digital still image cameras, digital camcorders, and LCD projection panels (Students must have faculty authorization to check out equipment)
The Technology Resources Center, in cooperation with the faculty and students of the Educational Technology program area, promotes the development of specialized learning materials and learning environments in all areas of education.


Macintosh/Windows Computer Learning Laboratory (BRNG 3292)
The Macintosh/Windows Computer Laboratory is based on a 100 Mbps Intranet with access to the Internet and the World Wide Web via a 10Mbps connection to the Purdue campus data network. Located in Room 3292 of the Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education (BRNG), it is designed to provide a cutting-edge computer laboratory in support of the educational mission of the College of Education.

The laboratory consists of 20 student workstations that include both a Macintosh G4 (MacOS) computer and a Gateway (Windows) computer. The computers share a common keyboard, mouse, and video monitor through a KVM switch. Therefore, users can select the platform of choice by selecting the CPU unit with the KVM switch.

In addition, the laboratory is equipped with a teacher workstation, laser printer, and a ceiling mounted projector.

Ameritech Distance Education Classroom and Windows Lab (BRNG 3288)
Located in Room 3287 of the Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education (BRNG), the Ameritech Distance Education Classroom is a laboratory dedicated to providing delivery of educational classes and programs of the College of Education to a variety of remote education/learning settings.

This laboratory houses a Picture Tel 4000 compressed video systems with a Socrates touch screen control system, three large monitors, two remote controlled cameras, and an LCD video and data projector mounted in the ceiling. Each student station has a PZM touch-to-talk microphone, and all microphone inputs are combined by a pair of audio mixers. The room is capable of dial-up connection to remote sites via ISDN telephone lines or, when patched in a Polycom ViewStation, via the Internet.

Each student station features a Nova desk which contains a Gateway Windows workstation and video monitor mounted below the desk top. The monitor is viewed through a glass panel in the desk top. All computer workstations have access to the Internet and World Wide Web and to a shared laser printer through a 100Mbps network with 10 Mbps access to the Purdue campus data network. The computer workstations are capable of conferencing via the Internet and World Wide Web.

Multimedia Development Laboratory (BRNG 3295)
The Multimedia Development Laboratory is based on a 100 Mbps Intranet with access to the Internet and the World Wide Web with 10 Mbps access to the Purdue campus data network. The laboratory is designed to provide a cutting edge multimedia development laboratory in support of the educational mission of the College of Education.

The laboratory consists of both Macintosh and Windows student workstations. Macintosh stations include iMacs as well as G3 and one G4 Macintosh computers. The iMacs and G4 feature digital video capture and editing capability. Windows workstations include Dell computers with Intel Smart Video III capture boards for still and full motion video capture. Pioneer LaserDisc players and VCRs are available for analog video capture. Two of the workstations are equipped with 30 bit 600 x 1200 color scanners and Photoshop and Omnipage OCR software.

The laboratory has a laser printer and several specialized tools:

  • Still video cameras
  • Complete post-production video editing console based on S-VHS video tape records, a Video Toaster editing station, and a pre-mastering video disc recorder
  • Audio editing studio
  • CD-ROM recorder console for audio, data, video, and hybrid CD-ROM creation
  • CD-RW recorder console for creating CD-ROMs and re-writable CDs in all "book" formats
