Admission

Admission Information Specific to Educational Technology

Decisions regarding admission of applicants to graduate programs in Educational Technology are made by the Purdue Graduate School using recommendations of the Educational Technology faculty. In general, baseline requirements for admission to graduate study include:

  • a bachelor's degree (for M.S. study) or a master's degree (for Ph.D. study)
  • a 3.0/4.0 grade point average (GPA)
  • an overall score of at least 77 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT version with minimum subscale scores of 18 for speaking, 18 for writing, 19 for reading, and 14 for listening for individuals whose first language is not English. Note: during the transition to the TOEFL iBT, Purdue will still accept a score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or above on older versions of the TOEFL.
  • a total verbal and quantitative score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) of 1000 or more for doctoral and international applicants; a verbal score of at least 500 is strongly preferred.

Meeting baseline standards does not ensure admission. When reviewing applicants, faculty members also consider:

  • letters of reference
  • the applicant's resume, experience, and professional goals
  • the applicant's "goodness of fit" with the program and likelihood of success in obtaining the degree
  • the number of students in the program and ability to provide adequate mentoring.

Applicants are admitted only when faculty members are convinced that they will be able to give each student proper individual attention. Admissions are highly competitive and only a small percentage of applicants may be admitted during any given admissions cycle.

Important information for international graduate assistants

All applicants whose native language is not English and who want to be considered for a teaching assistantship must show proof of English proficiency. Acceptable proof of English proficiency includes: a score of at least 27 on the speaking portion of the TOEFL iBT, a score of 50 or higher of the Test of Spoken English (TSE), a score of 7 or higher on the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), or a score of at least 5 on the locally administered Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT).

All teaching assistants whose first language is not English are required to take the following course in their first semester:

- ENGL 62000, Classroom Communication for International Graduate Students

This requirement can be waived if 1) TOEFL iBT speaking score score is 27 or higher (equivalent to TSE score 50 or higher) or 2) the Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT) score is 5 or higher. All international students are strongly encouraged to be prepared to take the test within the first month of their arrival at Purdue (the Oral English Proficiency Test, https://www.purdue.edu/oepp/oeptschedule.html ). Please contact Aggie Ward if you have any questions.

Applications received by the following dates will be given priority in the admissions process:

January 15 for summer and fall admission
          September 15 for spring admission
