EDCI 270 Test Out Procedure

What is a Test Out?
A test out of EDCI 270 can be completed via a project portfolio that will allow the student to demonstrate his/her knowledge and skill concerning the course content.

A test out of EDCI 270 is a two part examination (1/2 written and 1/2 practicum) that will allow the student to demonstrate his/her knowledge and skill concerning the course content.

To help you prepare for the written portion of the 270 examination you should familiarize yourself with the following text and it's content:

Newby, T. J., Stepich, D. A., Lehman, J. D., & Russell, J. D. (2006). Educational Technology for Teaching and Learning (3rd ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Merrill/Prentice-Hall.

When is the test offered?
The test out is offered each time EDCI 270 is offered, generally in the summer term and other select semesters. Students wishing to test out must complete the test out application, take the written portion of the exam,  and submit their portfolio by the test out deadline--typically two weeks prior to the start of class

The next test will be given:

**** Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 1:00pm in Beering 3292 ****

Who can attempt to test out of the course?
Any student who has not previously taken EDCI 270 or 560 is eligible. Generally, individuals who have already taken courses within Educational Technology, Computer Science or other related computer classes have the background to consider taking this test.

What is the benefit of testing out of this course?
You will receive course credit and you will not be required to complete any further projects, tests, or class attendance for EDCI 270. Credit only will be given, no grade.

What happens if you fail the test out?
If you do not perform satisfactorily on the exam, you will be allowed and encouraged to take EDCI 270. A poor score on the test out WILL NOT have any impact on the grade of projects or tests within the formal EDCI 270 course.

What are the procedures for attempting the test out?
1. Determine that you want to attempt the test out. Fill out an application and submit it 24 hours before the posted test out deadline. To submit the application, do the following:

    a. Right click on this link (Mac people, click and hold)

    b. Select the "Save the Target as..." option

    c. Save the document to your computer hard drive, career account, or to a disk

    d. Open the saved document with MS Word and fill out all of the needed information

    e. Resave the finished document

    f. Note all of the important due dates, etc. on the application

    g. Send an e-mail message to Tim Newby (newby@purdue.edu) and also a copy of the email to Cindy York (cyork@purdue.edu). Make sure you attach your completed application to the email message. We need to receive the application a minimum of 24 hours before the deadline.

2. The test itself will consist of two parts. The written portion will be given on one day and the practicum portion on a different day.

3. The written examination will cover specific course content related to Educational Technology. The course textbook and lectures will be the subject matter. It is suggested that those interested should examine the course discussions and questions posted on this website as a review for this examination (as well as study each chapter of the text).

4. If a grade of 80% or better is achieved on the written examination, then the practicum portion of the exam will be administered. Those receiving less than 80% on the written will not be allowed to continue with the test out.

5. For the practicum, the student will be required to demonstrate a portfolio of projects that he/she has personally created/developed. These projects must show proficiency with the use of word processing, presentation software, web development, the creation of computer based instructional materials, programming, etc. The examiner will then ask oral questions about the projects and will ask the student to demonstrate how selected aspects of the projects were completed. The student must then demonstrate his/her abilities with the software.

6. If both portions of the text out are completed with a minimum of 80%, a Purdue University Form 390 will be completed and the student will be given credit for the course.

7. You must fill out and submit the application to begin this test out process.

8. Good luck ...
