Graduate Competencies

1. Synthesize knowledge:

The graduate will synthesize knowledge of the broad field of curriculum studies and understand what it means to conduct, interpret and evaluate research in this and related areas.
In order to demonstrate this, the student will successfully complete the following courses and include a project from each in their Curriculum Studies portfolio:

   1. EDCI 580 Foundations of Curriculum
   2. EDCI 585 Multicultural Education
   3. EDPS 533 Introduction to Research in Education

2. Create knowledge:

The graduate will complete an inquiry project applying knowledge of the broad field of curriculum to a specific educational problem, issue, or situation. This will typically be demonstrated through a project completed in a course. Normally a paper would be the product of such an inquiry although other media may be used to demonstrate this process. Numerous courses would be suitable for this inquiry. (Select one area)
  a. Conduct a mini-research project
  b. Conduct research as part of a curriculum course
  c. Understand and apply curriculum theory in a theoretical paper or curriculum development project

3. Communicate knowledge:

The graduate will communicate knowledge in a professional forum. Options could include the following. Students are encouraged to communicate the knowledge developed in their inquiry project. (Select one area)
  a. Present at a university, state, regional, national, university meeting, class or colloquium
  b. Submit an article or book review for a scholarly journal, (in print, in a data base such as ERIC, or on the web)
  c. Explain problem solutions i.e. serve as a TA for a curriculum related course
  d. Serve as a discussion leader for assigned readings i.e. in a curriculum related course

4. Think critically and reflectively:

The graduate will demonstrate the ability to think critically and reflectively. This will typically be demonstrated through a paper written in a course, or an inquiry project. This paper should make reference to foundational course work described above. (Select one area)
  a. Prepare critical and reflective papers on a scholarly topic or literature review
  b. Prepare a journal or reflective piece on ones growth in understanding of curriculum theory and practice
  c. Address equity and diversity issues i.e. EDCI 585 or other appropriate courses or experiences

5. Engage in professional development (Select one area)

  a. Take part in K-12 or higher education workshops
  b. Attend professional meetings related to your discipline
  c. Prepare a Master?s Thesis
  d. Prepare a professional portfolio

6. Participate actively in their profession:

The graduate will participate in their profession through selecting at least one of the following types of experiences:

  a. Conduct K-12 or higher education workshops
  b. Become active in district, state or federal educational issues
  c. Present at professional meetings related to your discipline
  d. Publish a manuscript in a journal related to your discipline
  e. Participate actively in local, state, and national organizations
