Ackerman Summer Institute 2008:

 

Integrating Digital Primary Sources

in the Classroom

During this Institute, participants (called Ackerman Fellows) will have the opportunity to develop skills in Internet-based curriculum development and integrating digital primary sources into their instruction.  In addition, participants will have the unique opportunity to develop an age-appropriate project for use in their classrooms. Participants will be able to take away valuable technology-based curriculum development skills that can be useful in a variety of contexts.  
 
Ackerman Fellows will also be introduced to strategies for developing powerful learning and teaching priactices using the digital resources available on the Internet.

 

Among the topics the Institute will cover include the following: 

  • Integrating technology: A primer

  • Internet resources for history education

  • Digital primary sources (e.g., for use in teaching history)

  • Introduction to Primary Access–a digital presentation tool

  • Access to the Library of Congress Teaching with Digital Resources material

  • Introduction to the Indiana Historical Society digital resource library

 

The Tentative Schedule:

 

(Each day will run from approximately 8:30 am until 5:00 pm)

Day 1 – Introduction and Overview of Program/State Digital Library (Indiana Historical Society)/ Wikipedia technology by Dr. Adam Friedman (Wake Forest University)

Day 2Primary Access by Dr. Thomas Hammond (Lehigh University), one of the co-founders of Primary Access

Day 3Adventures of the American Mind – Digital Resources from the Library of Congress

Day 4 – Examples from the classroom

Day 5 – Implementation activities 

 

 

Ackerman Fellows will receive materials, and participant meal expenses (and if necessary, housing expenses) will be covered.  The Ackerman Center will pay for Fellows to earn three graduate credit hours from Purdue University. The Summer Institute also provides the opportunity to work collaboratively with educators from across Indiana, access to classroom and reference materials, as well as follow-up assistance and support in developing digital technology projects.
