During this
Institute, participants (called Ackerman Fellows) will have the opportunity to develop skills in
Internet-based curriculum development and integrating digital primary sources
into their instruction. In addition, participants will have the unique
opportunity to develop an age-appropriate project for use in their classrooms.
Participants will be able to take away valuable technology-based curriculum
development skills that can be useful in a variety of contexts.
Among the topics the Institute will cover include the following:
(Each day will run from approximately 8:30 am until 5:00 pm) Day 1 – Introduction and Overview of Program/State Digital Library (Indiana Historical Society)/ Wikipedia technology by Dr. Adam Friedman (Wake Forest University) Day 2 – Primary Access by Dr. Thomas Hammond (Lehigh University), one of the co-founders of Primary Access Day 3 – Adventures of the American Mind – Digital Resources from the Library of Congress Day 4 – Examples from the classroom Day 5 – Implementation activities
Ackerman Fellows will receive materials, and participant meal expenses (and if necessary, housing expenses) will be covered. The Ackerman Center will pay for Fellows to earn three graduate credit hours from Purdue University. The Summer Institute also provides the opportunity to work collaboratively with educators from across Indiana, access to classroom and reference materials, as well as follow-up assistance and support in developing digital technology projects. If you are a a 5th or an 8th grade teacher (or know one) who is intellectually active, interested in challenging (but rewarding) professional development, enjoys the use of technology (or is interested in using more technology) in their teaching, and who wishes to impact future citizens of Indiana, please apply for the Summer Institute by following this link: 2008 Summer Institute Application If you have questions about the Institute or the application process, please e-mail Phillip VanFossen, Director or Kathy Reppert, Administrative Assistant. |
